New SITA Plant to Recycle 40,000 TPA of Road Sweepings

11 April 2012 Following the installation of new equipment from Cookstown, Northern Ireland based waste waster treatment specialist, CDEnviro, SITA UK's Neatchells Lane facility in Wolverhampton will now be able to recycle road sweepings and gully arisings. According to CDEnviro, prior to the installation of the plant all such material passing through the facility was taken directly to landfill. The company said that it is now estimates that 98% of the road sweepings entering the plant will be recycled for use in various products such as sand, washed aggregate and compostable material which will be recovered from the incoming road sweeping waste using the technology. This facility is expected to process more than 40,000 tonnes of road sweepings collected from across the midlands each year. The system installed has a capacity to handle 15 tonnes of road sweepings and gulley waste each hour and includes a full water treatment system. The equipment supplier said the project involved extensive material testing, following which several new pieces of equipment were developed including a bespoke material specific feed hopper arrangement, along with a RotoMax 60R high attrition system specifically designed to handle this heavily contaminated material. The facility enables SITA to help its clients achieve their recycling targets while also reducing their requirement for virgin aggregate and increasing composting volumes. Commenting on the installation, Chris Male, Regional Processing Area Manager for SITA UK explained: "The investment will allow us to recover recyclable materials from road sweeping waste that is currently landfilled." "The recycled sand and aggregates can be reused by many of our customers in road construction, pipe bedding materials or blended with rock salt and used with grit on roads in the winter months," he added. The company said that the plant has now been in operation for five months and continues to run smoothly.
