Palm Beach Awards $668 Million Waste to Energy Contract
Two boilers at the county's existing RDF plant were recently refurbished by BE&K 20 April 2011 A $668 million contract has been awarded to a consortium including Babcock and Wilcox to build a 95 MW Waste to Energy facility in Palm Beach, Florida. The consortium consisting of BE&K Construction Company LLC (BE&K) - a subsidiary and a subsidiary of engineering and construction company, KBR - and Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) has been awarded the contract by the Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority (SWA). Under the contract the consortium will provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the facility. The project will consist of three new mass burn boilers, grates, ash systems, emissions control equipment - including a dry flue gas desulfurization unit, baghouse, carbon injection and selective catalytic reduction system - duct work and other components. In addition the facility will feature a metals recovery system to maximize the recovery and recycle of aluminium, steel and other metals. On completion the facility will be capable of processing 3000 tons (2700 tonnes) of municipal solid waste every day, producing electricity and significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to the county's landfill. B&W will design and supply the boilers and air quality control systems. BE&K will provide engineering and procurement of the balance of plant equipment and provide overall construction services for the project. The contract award follows the successful completion by BE&K of a major refurbishment of the County's existing two-boiler waste to energy facility. "Having joined forces with Babcock & Wilcox on more than 40 major design/build projects for the last 40 plus years, I am confident that this team offers the unparalleled execution know-how necessary to successfully deliver a world-class facility to Palm Beach County and its residents," said Jim Stewart, President, KBR Power & Industrial. Work on the project is expected to begin in May 2011.
