Pennsylvania Landfill Expansion Given Green Light

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has approved an application by Waste Management, Inc. to expand Lake View Landfill in Summit Township, Erie County. The Department of Environmental Protection ( DEP) recently completed its technical review of the permit application, which examines the project’s design details, and had previously approved the environmental assessment portion of the application. Under the new permit, Waste Management, Inc. intends to increase the existing disposal area by approximately 90 acres (36 hectares), expanding the landfill to the south of the existing disposal area and adding approximately 18 million cubic yards (14 million cubic metres) of space. The volume of waste accepted at Lake View Landfill will not change under the new permit. It will remain at the landfill’s currently approved waste acceptance volumes of 4600 tons per day (4170 tonnes per day) average and 5000 tons per day (4530 tonnes per day) maximum. Based on the permit average, the expansion will provide approximately 10 years of additional disposal capacity.
