Planning Permission for Biogas Plant & New Recycling Contract for SITA
23 August 2012 SITA UK has been granted planning permission for a 50,000 tonne per annum food waste to biogas facility in Packington site near Meriden, by Warwickshire County Council's Planning and Regulatory Committee. According to the company - a subsidiary of SUEZ Environnement (Paris: SEV, Brussels: SEVB) - the proposed anaerobic digestion facility would treat municipal, industrial and commercial organic wastes such as food and green garden waste. SITA added that the plans also include a proposal to have polytunnels operated by local growers for crops and flowers that will utilise the compost, liquid fertiliser and heat produced by the facility. An area of the polytunnels may be dedicated for use by local schools and community organisations for horticultural use. The application will now be referred to the Secretary of State in accordance with departure procedures and subject to the application not being called in for determination by the Secretary of State SITA UK expects to start work on the facility in 2014. North Lincolnshire recycling contract The company has also recently been awarded a seven year recycling contract by North Lincolnshire Council for a full range of recycling services, including box collections, bring sites, receiving council collected recyclables and transporting materials from household waste recycling centres. The contract will start early November 2012. The council and SITA UK will work together to encourage residents and businesses to recycle more of their rubbish - through education and joint campaigns. "This contract is very significant as it will set the boundaries for recycling over the next seven years," explained Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for Highways and Neighbourhood at North Lincolnshire Council, said: "Many residents are recycling regularly, but there are those that don't bother and it is these people we need to target to find out why this is and somehow try and encourage them to do so," he added.
