Railroad Wood Waste to Energy Technology Selection
15 November 2011 Canadian renewable energy developer, Green Energy Solution Industries, Inc. (GESI) has narrowed down its search for proven technology to convert waste railway ties into energy to three main contenders. The company has a contract with Edmonton, Canada based On-Track, under which it will be supplied between 300,000 (27,200 tonnes) rail ties per year and 1.5 million (136,100 tonnes) rail ties per year at no cost for use as a waste to energy feedstock. The rail ties are broken down on-site by On-Track prior to being supplied to GESI. The ability to use the small chips of creosote soaked rail ties for energy creation makes for a predictable energy output for the chosen technology. According to the company the available technologies for processing the rail ties has been narrowed to three providers, all with commercial scale plants in operation that utilise wood waste for energy production. The technologies include pyrolosis systems and boiler systems, explains CEO Gordon MacKay: "The technologies and companies being examined by GESI represent solid proven systems that must meet demanding proven real world production abilities over the long term." GESI says that it is on track to go through the process of selection from these providers in order to achieve its targeted annual revenue of $15,000,000. Furthermore, it expects to achieve a technology selection which could substantially be paid for under available energy credits of up to $5 million annually from Alberta Energy for energy outputs of renewable plants. The company is currently entering into an agreement for engineering selection for project oversight, it will then be ready for a funding source presentation for the overall project funding for the plant, located in Alberta.
