Recycler to Supply New 30 MW Wood Waste Facility

E.onâs existing Stevens Croft biomass facility in Lockerbie 15 November 2011 Lancashire, UK based recycling firm R Plevin & Sons has secured an exclusive contract from utility company, E.ON to supply waste timber for a £120 million biomass fired renewable energy plant. E.ON has unveiled details of its biomass-fired renewable energy plant, which will begin construction at the end of November, at Blackburn Meadows near Sheffield. According to E.ON, the £120 million biomass-fired plant - located near the site of the old Tinsley Towers, at Blackburn Meadows near Sheffield - is due to begin at the end of November and the plant is expected to become operational in mid 2014, using UK sourced recycled waste wood as fuel When operational E.ON expects the new facility to generate up to 30MW - enough to power 40,000 homes, once operational in mid 2014. Plevin currently collects, processes and distributes some 600,000 tonnes of wood each year, across six sites and manufactures a range of wood-based products from virgin and waste wood materials. According to the company it sources waste wood from council civic amenity sites, skip hire firms, pallet manufacturers and joinery workshops. The recycler says that the multi-million pound contract is the most lucrative in the family-owned company's 38-year history and will enable it to create a raft of new jobs at its existing sites and embark on an ambitious expansion programme. Managing director Jamie Plevin is keen to reassure the company's existing customers that this contract will not affect them. "In order to meet the demand, we will be creating new jobs at our existing sites as well as opening a number of new facilities at strategic locations. This geographical expansion will happen either through acquisitions, or through opening new sites ourselves," he explains. Luke Ellis, project manager at E.ON, adds: "It was important to us to use UK sourced recycled waste wood to power the Blackburn Meadows plant." E.ON already owns and operates a 44MW dedicated biomass plant at Steven's Croft, near Lockerbie.
