Waste & Recycling Firm Partners with Mas Energy of Three LFG Plants : Republic Opens 24.1 MW of Landfill Gas-to-Energy Projects in Georgia
Phoenix, Arizona based waste and recycling firm, Republic Services (NYSE: RSG) and Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida based renewable energy developer, Mas Energy, have opened three new landfill gas-to-energy facilities with a total generating capacity of 24.1 MW in Georgia.
Located on three area landfill sites located in the cities of Buford, Griffin and Winder Republic said that the projects are part of its Blue Planet™ sustainability initiative.
The company explained that the initiative is intended to define its approach to environmental responsibility through decreased vehicle emissions, landfill technologies, the use of renewable energy, community engagement and employee growth opportunities.
According to the firm, based upon EPA calculations, this project prevents carbon emissions that would otherwise be emitted equivalent to the use of more than 132 million gallons (500 million litres) of gasoline.
Other partners on the project include Georgia Power, I Squared Capital, Crowder Construction Company and Nixon Energy.
Nationwide, Republic Services said that it now sends landfill gas to 69 landfill gas-to-energy projects, which taken together generate enough energy to power more than 250,000 homes, or every household in the city of Atlanta.
