Rumpke Building $32m Recycling Facility in Ohio
Colerain Township, Ohio based Rumpke Recycling is building a $32 million, 85,000 square foot (7900 square metre) recycling center in St. Bernard, Ohio to replace its former facility which was destroyed by fire April 2012. The company claimed that the project will create one of the largest and most advanced residential recycling systems in the U.S., capable of sorting up to 55 tons (50 tonnes) of material every hour - more than double the capability of the previous system. According to Rumpke the system, which has the potential to process up to nearly 15,000 tons (13,600 tonnes) of material each month, will serve more than 4.5 million residents in Cincinnati and beyond. Like the previous recycling center, the company said that the new plant will use optical sorting technology to identify and separate recyclable materials by type. The system will be able to sort all the traditionally accepted recyclables including glass bottles and jars, paper, cardboard, aluminum and steel cans and plastic bottles, as well as cartons or aseptic containers such as juice boxes which will be processed through a partnership between Rumpke and the U.S. Carton Council. The company added that the operation will also expand commercial glass recycling opportunities for major generators such as bars and restaurants. The processing system will be designed by recycling equipment manufacturer, Machinex, which also designed Rumpke’s Columbus, Ohio, Material Recovery Facility that opened last year. Dugan & Meyers Construction is the contractor and Steven Schaefer Associates is performing the architectural work. Rumpke said that it expects the site to open in late fall and bring around 100 new jobs to St. Bernard. A news video covering the new facility can be seen below.
