UK First as B&W Volund DynaGrate Installed at 7.25 Viridor Waste to Energy Plant

Earlier this week, Waste Management World attended a ceremony to mark the installation of the Babcock & Wilcox Vølund is launching DynaGrate® at Viridor’s new 7.25 MW waste to energy plant in Peterborough, UK. The facility is the first in the UK to be equipped with the Dynagrate system, and the project marks the first time that Vølund has operated as turnkey supplier of not only the combustion system, but also the flue gas treatment system through its Swedish subsidiary Götaverken Miljö. Once complete the facility will process around 85,000 tonnes of residual black bin waste every year. Speaking to WMW, Volund’s director of technology, Ole Hedegaard Madsen said that the waste to energy equipment market was moving towards having fewer players that are able to offer clients a bigger part of the project’s scope. “The important thing is to be able to do the complete train,” he said. “Our customers do not want ot buy small packages and put them together themselves. They want to buy a function." He also said that while the waste to energy equipment market is now mature in some parts of Europe, Volund sees potential for growth in the UK and Ireland, particularly in the delivery of smaller scale facilities, such as the Peterborough facility. “We see the market moving away from Scandinavia of course, because it’s mature. The UK is going to be a nice market for smaller plants like Peterborough. Here in the UK there’s a focus on district heating, or at least you want to move in that direction… and it’s much easier if it’s on a small scale,” explained Hedegaard Madsen. The site for the Peterborough waste to energy plant covers an area of 1.9 hectares and was occupied by Peterborough City Council’s materials recycling facility, which was also operated by Viridor. According to Viridor, work on the facility is on track for the hot commissioning process to commence in summer 2015, with the acceptance certificate being issued and the facility being handed over that winter following endurance tests.
