Veolia Opens 16 MW Newhaven Waste to Energy Plant

04 July 2012 Veolia has officially opened its controversial 210,000 TPA Newhaven waste to energy facility in North Quay, East Sussex. The company said that the facility forms an integral part of the overall waste management and treatment solution for East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council. According to Veolia Environmental Services - part of Veolia Environnement (Paris Euronext: VIE and NYSE: VE) - the facility is contributing to maximising landfill diversion whilst saving the taxpayer over £2.5 million per annum in waste disposal costs. At the opening Veolia were keen to point out that the plant operates under highly controlled conditions and converts residual waste left over after recycling into around 16.5 MW of electricity for the National Grid - enough electricity to power 25,000 homes. The facility will also provide the opportunity to supply heat to nearby users. The company said that Emissions are monitored constantly and the Environment Agency has stringent requirements for the operation of the plant. The facility had proved controversial, with the local MP reportedly boycotting the opening ceremony, but the project has received strong backing from the local council. County Council Leader Peter Jones said: "I am very pleased to be opening the energy recovery facility, which reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill, produces electricity, and will save taxpayers £2.5 million in waste disposal costs in this year alone. Jones went on to explained that virtually nothing leaves the facility as a waste, with ferrous metals being extracted by magnets and sold on as scrap metal and the incinerator bottom ash used in road construction. "We have nearly doubled our recycling rates since joining the integrated waste contract with Veolia and Brighton & Hove and we are fulfilling our pledge that there will be no new landfill or land raise in East Sussex for municipal waste," Jones continued. "The coming years will therefore see a further transformation in how we deal with waste as we work towards our goal of ever more sustainable waste resource management," he concluded. Veolia said that the plant represents a £160 million capital investment in the area and various orders placed locally during the construction phase totalled over £10 million. In addition five hundred temporary posts were created during construction and forty people are now permanently employed on the site - of which 70% live locally according to the company.
