Veolia Reopens Hazardous Waste Recycling Plant in Ohio
21 June 2012 A hazardous reclamation and treatment facility in West Carrollton, Ohio has been reopened by Veolia ES Technical Solutions, the hazardous waste division of Veolia Environmental Services North America. According to the company - a subsidiary of Veolia Environnement (NYSE: VE and Paris Euronext: VIE) - the facility now incorporates cutting edge technology to reclaim and repurpose hazardous materials, greater than 70% of which comes from businesses in the Ohio Valley. The West Carrollton facility repurposes and reclaims eight million gallons (30 million litres) a year of oils, paints, solvents and other hazardous materials and recycles them back into material that can be reused. Solvents are reclaimed to 99.5% purity. Veolia said that following a fire in 2009 fire it has invested considerable effort and capital into designing a new state-of-the-art reclamation facility from a safety and technological standpoint. "We met with employees 48 hours after the incident and made the commitment that we would rebuild the facility, placing sustainability and safety at the top of our priority list," explained Jim Bell, president and CEO of Veolia ES Technical Solutions. The company added that all equipment in the new plant, including treatment, processing and transfer equipment meets strict building and safety standards for a facility of this type. The facility utilises best available current technology allows for emissions recovery to 98% (the previous system was 90%) and new storage tanks have a 24% increase in capacity to allow for more efficient processing and outbound shipments, according to Veolia. The rebuilt facility boasts expanded processing capabilities that include fuel blending, solvent recovery, and non-hazardous waste consolidation for most technologies. "This new facility is built to the highest industry standards utilising the most advanced technologies to ensure lower emissions and a safe work environment," added Bell. Veolia said that it will be fully functional by summer of 2012 and will employ 70 to 80 local residents. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, Veolia Environnement has more than three buyers interested in it's U.S. solid waste business, which it put up for sale to address its debts.
