An investigation into a huge fire which was tackled by over 100 firefighters at a chemical recycling facility in Leeds, UK is underway. West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said that the blaze, which broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning, required 15 Firefighting pumps, 2 aerial appliances and numerous specialist appliances attended along with specialist officers from across the brigade. The service said that a call was received at 01:55 hours on 21April to a report of a fire at a recycling facility on Tradpak Albion Way, Armley. The fire involved two buildings and crews worked hard to prevent further spread to surrounding property. At the height of the incident 15 fire engines, two hydraulic platforms and a specialist high volume pumping appliance were in use. This required over 100 Fire Fighters. The Fire Service added that the building had been used for storing large amount of chemicals and that LPG cylinders involved. West Yorkshire Police also deployed officers to seal off nearby roads and evacuate a nearby nightclub due to concerns for the safety of revellers. The Police said that due to swift work in containing the fire there was no need to evacuate any nearby homes - or the nearby Armley Prison. “I want to reassure residents that everything has been done to get the fire under control, and minimise the effect on residents,” commented Superintendent Mabs Hussain of Leeds District Police. "We can also confirm that the smoke from the fire is not toxic. However as a precaution, we have continued to advise people near the site to keep doors and windows shut while the smoke has cleared, as we would do with any large fire," continued Hussain. "The substantial operation at this site will continue for some time and police officers will begin to work with fire investigators to examine the cause of the blaze when the situation has been made safe,” he added.
