Investigation as S-200 Angara Sold for Scrap Kills Two : VIDEO: Surface to Air Missile Explodes at Russian Recycling Yard
A Cold War era surface-to-air missile, sold as scrap to a recycling yard, has exploded in the Siberian city of Chita, Russia, reportedly killing two people.
Media reports said that a criminal investigation into the S-200 Angara missile came to be sold to the scrap yard where two warheads detonated.
According to reports, Local authorities said it appeared that the explosion had occurred while workers were cutting it down for scrap metal.
S-200 Angara is a very long range, medium-to-high altitude surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed in the 1960s to defend large areas from bomber attack. It is no longer used by the Russian military.
Selling weaponry for scrap was reported to be “not unusual” in remote Russian regions. World War II shells were said to have been found by the National Guard in the Kaliningrad region just last month.
The investigation will focus on the “acquisition and storage of explosive device".
