7.25 MW Plant Features Babcock & Wilcox Vølund’s DynaGrate : Viridor Opens 85,000 TPA Peterborough Waste to Energy Plant
UK waste and recycling firm, Viridor, has officially opened its 85,000 tonne per year, 7.25 MW waste to energy plant in Peterborough.
According to the company – a part of the Pennon Group (LSE:PNN) – the new waste to energy plant is one of the most efficient in the UK and will reduce the amount of carbon the city produces by 10,000 tonnes per year.
Viridor said that it will also create two tailored engineering apprenticeships for young people designed to support the operations team on site.
Dan Cooke, director of external affairs for Viridor said the plant, which features Babcock & Wilcox Vølund’s DynaGrate® combustion technology, was delivered on time and on budget.
The Peterborough Energy Recovery Facility is expected to enable the city to divert 85,000 tonnes of residual black bag waste from landfill each year.
“The project brings clear community benefits, providing local jobs and apprenticeships, low-carbon energy and clear economic benefits for our local authority partners in Peterborough,” commented Cook.
“During the construction period alone over £9.8 million was spent in the immediate vicinity of the facility, and local supply chain opportunities will continue during the operational life of the facility,” he continued.
Councilor John Holdich added: “The plant is a real asset, enabling the City of Peterborough to realise a zero to landfill solution for the coming decades, along with generating revenue through the sale of electricity generated by the facility delivering value for money for our residents.”
“This positions the City strongly with the aspiration of becoming the UK’s Environment Capital. By leading the project the council will be able to benefit by saving £1m a year over the 30 years of the contract,” concluded Holdich.
