Viridor Secures Feedstock for 28 MW Cardiff Waste to Energy Facility in PPP Deal

Waste and recycling company, Viridor - a part of the Pennon Group (LSE: PNN) has signed a Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract to process the residual waste from five welsh councils at its 350,000 tonne per year waste to energy facility in Cardiff. According to the company, Cardiff City Council, acting on behalf Prosiect Gwyrdd - a partnership of five local authorities from across South Wales - signed the contract which will see around 172,000 tonnes of the councils’ residual commercial and industrial waste delivered to the Trident Park facility each year over the next 25 years. The waste to energy facility is currently under construction and is expected to be completed during 2014. “After a three-year tendering process, we are delighted to have signed this contract,” commented Viridor business development director, Howard Ellard. “Construction of the £223 million facility has already brought jobs and economic benefits to the area, and will provide around 40 permanent jobs - including apprenticeship opportunities,” he added. Once operating at its full capacity of 350,000 tonnes per year, the facility is expected to generate 28 MW of electricity. Viridor said that it is also working with Cardiff Council on future plans for a district heating network which could increase the power generation through electricity and heat to 43MW. Prosiect Gwyrdd, which includes the authorities of Cardiff, Monmouthshire, Caerphilly, Vale of Glamorgan and Newport, will start sending waste from September 2015, with full service starting on 1 April 2016.
