96,000 TPA Waste to Energy Plant to be Largest of Kind in UK : Waste Gasification Fuel Bunker Contract for Saxlund in Herts, UK
Saxlund International is to supply push floor fuel storage and discharge bunkers for a new 96,000 tonne per year waste to energy gasification facility currently under construction in Hertfordshire, UK.
The company, a part of the Trention AB energy and environmental technology group, was awarded the contract by Bouygues Energies & Services, which is responsible for the engineering and construction the waste to energy in Hoddesdon
Under the contract Saxlund International is responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of two crane fed fuel bunkers with shear walls constructed in steel, together capable of handling the 96,000 tonnes of refuse derived fuel (RDF) required by the plant each year. These will receive, store and discharge RDF to twin conveying streams feeding the gasifiers at the plant.
Saxlund explained that its Push Floor technology ensures ‘first in first out’ with design principles which limit the opportunity for the fuel to degrade or compact.
A reciprocating action back and forth across the floor of the bunker is said to continuously break up the material, preventing any build up or bridging and ensure consistent and measured delivery of fuel to the discharge point.
“This green energy project, just 22 miles North East of London, will be a landmark facility for gasification in the UK,” commented Matt Drew, managing director of Saxlund International.
According to Drew the push floor technology is ideal for handling RDF and has been developed over a number of years at numerous waste to energy projects across Europe.
The £60 million 10 MWe facility is being developed by AssetGen Partners, and is said to be the largest of its type in the UK,
It will employ gasification technology designed by Stafford based Biomass Power Limited and is due to commence operations in the first half of 2017.
