Asset International Designs & Installs Modular Tanks for 240,000 TPD plant : Weholite Water Tanks Installed at SUEZ’s St Denis Waste to Energy Plant in Cornwall
Two advanced Weholite Modular tanks have been installed to help manage the complex water flows at SUEZ’s 240,000 tonne per year St Denis waste to energy plant in Cornwall, UK.
The units were designed, prefabricated and installed by Asset International Limited using Weholite technology and are expected to help the waste to energy plant meet strict environmental conditions once operational later this year.
Weholite was first developed in Finland as a lightweight, durable, easy to install and abrasion-resistant product that is tolerant of ground movements. The low pressure-high technology pipe is said to offer the construction and water industries a low overall cost solution across a range of applications.
According to Asset International, Uponor Infra’s UK and Irish licensee for Weholite HDPE Structured Wall Pipe and Weholite Modular brands, the challenge it face was to design tanks that could cope with the high water table on the six hectare site and withstand main traffic loading on top.
Moreover the company explained that the rectangular structures - measuring 3.5m x 20m x 3m - required walls of varying thickness in order to handle water at different temperatures during the power generation process.
The engineering team at Asset International’s plant in Newport, South Wales, used specialised ‘finite element’ software to simulate conditions on site, which the company said allowed them to design bespoke tanks to meet the client’s specific needs.
The company added that the polyethylene solution was chosen over more traditional materials – such as concrete – due to the fact that it is quicker to deliver and install, and exceed other materials in resilience and longevity.
Following design, each tank was pre-fabricated in two parts at Asset’s Newport factory and assembled on site in Cornwall.
