The City of Des Moines has launched of a recycling pilot program, Recycle DSM, aimed at creating a cleaner and greener Downtown area in the city.

Launched in partnership withOperation Downtown, a Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) managed by the Downtown Community Alliance, Recycle DSM will place recycling receptacles in East Village for area workers, visitors and residents.

The City said that it aligns with the Des Moines City Council’s five year strategic plan, specifically the goal of providing a sustainable community and will initially launch as a pilot program for six months.

This initiative will also run alongside recent city ordinance adopted to further advance recycling options in the home.

The City explained that it aims to evaluate opportunities to achieve a 100% reduction of solid waste by 2050. To help achieve this it said that recycling would be made easy in the East Village.

Employees, visitors and residents can take plastic, metal and paper and drop them in one of eight cans that will be placed in the neighborhood.

The pilot program will also build on current efforts at residential properties, as well as efforts that include cigarette butt recycling through Operation Downtown and recycling at various Downtown events.

“The time is right for Des Moines to have a holistic recycling program,” commented Mayor Frank Cownie. “This Recycle DSM pilot program will provide us with a start which if successful, could be the beginning of a larger recycling program.”

“As Downtown continues to grow both in the number of residents and through strong business development, we have an opportunity to proactively create a culture of keeping Downtown clean and sustainable,” added Tiffany Tauscheck, Greater Des Moines Partnership Chief Communications Officer.

“I encourage Downtown patrons to utilize this pilot program to keep the East Village an attractive place to live, work and visit,” she concluded.
