Open waste burning (OWB) is an urgent environmental and public health crisis in low- and middle-income countries, yet little work has been done to understand it through a gender lens. In this article, Delila Khaled, founder and principal of ImpaXus, a global development advisory firm, shares details from her research on OWB in Samaná Province, Dominican Republic. Her study provides new insights into the gender-waste-climate nexus, presenting important implications and recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers who are advancing efforts to end this hazardous practice.
